سانتریفوژ برگرفته از واژه لاتین Centrum به معنای مرکز و Fugere به معنای گریز است. این وسیله با استفاده از نیروی گریز از مرکز در حرکت دورانی، ترکیبات یک مخلوط را از هم جدا می کند.
سانتریفوژ به وسیله نیروی گریز از مرکز ( نیرویی که وقتی اجسام حول یک محور ثابت می چرخند، ایجاد می شود) ذرات سوسپانسیون را از مایع جدا می کند. حرکت دورانی می تواند سبب تفکیک دو مایع با غلظت های مختلف شود. در نتیجه ی حرکت دورانی نیرویی چند برابر نیروی جاذبه در یک مدت زمان کنترل شده، ایجاد می شود. در آزمایشگاه، سانتریفوژ در مراحلی مانند جداسازی مواد جامد از مایعات بالینی در نتیجه ی تشکیل رسوب و همچنین برای تفکیک اجزای مختلف خون از جمله گلبول های قرمز، گلبول های سفید، پلاکت ها و انجام آزمایش های متعدد دیگر کاربرد دارد.
